Florida Bar says it ‘erroneously’ stated Halligan is under investigation

Florida’s bar says it “erroneously” stated that an ethics investigation is underway against Lindsey Halligan, the ex-U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia who prosecuted President Trump’s political adversaries.

A spokesperson for the Florida Bar said in a statement to The Hill that no such pending investigation exists.

There is no such pending Bar investigation of Lindsay Halligan,” she continued. “In this case, The Florida Bar received a complaint against Lindsay Halligan and, consistent with standard practice, the Bar is monitoring the ongoing legal proceedings underlying the complaint.”

The clarification comes a day after the bar seemed to confirm an ongoing probe by saying it does not “comment on active cases.”

The Hill has requested comment from Halligan. The Justice Department declined to comment.

A person familiar with the situation told The Hill that the bar has opened a “monitor file” on Halligan, which is its regular process for when any attorney is involved in an ongoing legal proceeding. It ensures that the organization checks back to see the outcome of that other proceeding.

Halligan’s disqualification as U.S. attorney by a federal judge is under review by a federal appeals court.
